In his first season in the Bronx, Gossage ravaged the American League. He led the league in appearances and saves. Night after night, he slammed the door. Hitters dug in and saw nothing but smoke and fury. He carved through lineups with a 2.01 ERA over 134 1/3 innings. That workload belonged to another era. So did his fearlessness.
The Yankees rode his right arm all the way back to the mountaintop. October pressure never rattled him. He attacked it. In three Fall Classic outings in ’78, Gossage allowed one hit, struck out four, and did not allow a single run. The club repeated as World Series champions, and Gossage stood at the center of the storm.
He even won ten games in 1978, a reliever refusing limits. Gossage was handed him the ball whenever the game teetered. Fans rose when he jogged in from the bullpen. He earned his fourth straight All-Star selection and seized the Rolaids Relief Man Award. The hardware fit the legend.
Today, collectors treasure moments like this signed card from Goose and Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers. Two relief titans. Two eras of dominance. One snapshot of bullpen greatness.
