Pablo Sandoval will be forever loved by fans of the San Francisco Giants. In the 2012 Fall Classic, the Venezuelan third baseman propelled the Giants to a sweep over the Detroit Tigers to earn their second title in three years.
Sandoval earned the World Series MVP Award by going 8-for-16 with three home runs, a double and four runs batted in. Two of Kung Fu Panda’s homers came off of Detroit ace Justin Verlander in Game 1. He added another bomb later in the game to join Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, and Albert Pujols as the record-holders for homers in a single Series game.
Sandoval played his first seven years in San Francisco, hitting .294 from 2008-2014. The two-time All Star enjoyed his career year in 2011 when he hit .315 with 23 homers, a .909 OPS, and a 155 OPS+.
The third baseman left the Giants after 2014 when he signed a 5-year $95 million contract with the Red Sox. His stay in Boston was disappointing. In parts of three seasons from 2015-2017, Sandoval hit .237 before the Sox released him in July of ’17.
Three days after Boston jettisoned him, the Giants snapped him up. Once back in San Francisco, Sandoval enjoyed a resurgence of sorts. In each of the first two full seasons after his return, he posted a positive WAR.
In the collection is the receipt that Sandoval signed for the first All Star Game ring of his career in 2011, the season before his World Series heroics.
