Cole Hamels quietly built a career on the cusp of Hall of Fame consideration. An All Star in his second season, Hamels had a career year in his third campaign of 2008. That year he won 14 regular season games before a post-season in which he was dominant.
In the NLDS Hamels threw 8 innings of scoreless baseball to win his only start. His Phillies advanced to the NLCS where Hamels won two more contests, pitching to a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings and earning the NLCS MVP Award. When Philadelphia won it all in the Fall Classic, it was Hamels who was the Most Valuable Player.
With positive SABRmetric number, Hamels likely needed to bolster his traditional counting numbers to gain induction to Cooperstown. He finished with 163 wins and 2,560 strikeouts.
In the collection is the document Hamels signed to receive his 2011 All Star ring. Though selected for the squad, Hamels was not allowed to play in the game because he pitched the Sunday prior to the game.
Hamels NL squad won the game 5-1. The game was decided when Prince Fielder clouted a three-run homer to seal the win and earn him the game’s MVP Award.
