Carlos Delgado is the greatest player ever to be one-and-done in Hall of Fame voting. The Puerto Rico native is one of only 8 men to have at least 9 straight seasons of 30 or more homers. The list is peppered with the game’s greatest players.
Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Mike Schmidt and Eddie Mathews make the grade. Each are in the Hall of Fame. So does Albert Pujols. The other players on this list, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Rafael Palmeiro are linked to steroids. Even they lasted more than one year on the ballot.
Delgado’s career numbers stack up nicely. His 473 homers and 1,512 runs batted in rank the top 60 in baseball history. They also put Delgado atop the list of players born in Puerto Rico.
For a 13-year run from 1996-2008, Delgado was an offensive force. He averaged 35 homers and 112 RBI in that span while posting an OPS+ of 140. His hit .282 with a .386 on-base percentage during that run.
When Delgado became eligible for the ballot, many believed it was a matter of time until he was elected. Instead, Delgado earned 3.8% of the vote and was dropped from the Cooperstown ballot.
In the collection is a contract extension between Topps chewing gem and Carlos Delgado. Singed on February 24, 2004, he contract ran his final season in 2009.
PUT GIL HODGES INTO YHE H.O.F.
HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED 40 YEARS AGO
Carlos Delgado should be in the Hall of Fame. His numbers are better than some of the players in there. However, the younger Voters might not have seen him play, or the threat that PITCHERS FELT when he came to bat. Specially if the Game was on the Line.
Roger Maris hit 61 first and was a complete player who won 2 AL MVPs.
Maris?!??! In his other ten seasons he had less than 600 RBI and less than 600 Runs scored,, 175 HR and
Carlos Delgado was canceled by the conservative bigoted sports writing and broadcasting establishment. He didn’t stand up for the national anthem. Spoke about Puerto Rico issues and wasn’t warm and fuzzy with the media. I saw him play and I t s criminal he wasn’t on the ballot longer and a half member.
